One families story of having to evacuate their home because of the Dog Head Fire in New Mexico………Our Dear Friend Lydia Haley Crandall posted this on her Facebook about 4 hours ago….Lydia is the daughter of Dear Friends Frank and Alice Haley. Lydia and her hubby, my Dear Friend Tracy live at live at 30 Val Verde Loop, Edgewood. South of town really, off Ballenger Ranch road/hwy 217. I just got a message from Lydia and told her we are all praying for safety and rain!!! All photos are from Lydia.
This terrible fire got way too close for comfort tonight; we could see flames shooting up in the sky & trees bursting into flames from our front porch. We finally decided to evacuate, grabbed some important things & left home in a hurry. It was very fast moving & scary! The younger kids, the dogs & I are safe at my parents’ house. Tracy & our older kids are busy at home rounding up goats & horses & heading to our friends’ house in Estancia. I’m gonna try to get some sleep; supposed to work in the morning. Thank you for your continued prayers! It feels so surreal; all of this…leaving our home again due to fire. It’s hard to wrap my mind around all of it. I feel heartbroken for the many families in our community that are being affected by this. On our way out, I stopped by our neighbors house to make sure she was leaving her home as well. She’s an elderly widow. As I pulled in her driveway, I saw her coming down her steps, arms full of photo albums. She had the most distraught look on her face. She hugged me & thanked me for checking on her. Aspen & I helped her to her car with a few of her treasures, including her late husband’s ashes ???? in the midst of all of this I’m feeling so thankful to God, once again, for his provision & protection. Dear Lord, please protect the brave men & women fighting this fire. Please send the rain!!❤️????????
Governor Susana Martinez Declares State of Emergency in Response to Dog Head Wildfire
Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez declared a state of emergency in response to the Dog Head Wildfire affecting portions of Bernalillo and Torrance Counties. The Governor has also directed state agencies to offer all available resources to assist local authorities in the affected areas.
“Our first priority is the health and safety of New Mexicans in the affected areas and communities,” Governor Martinez said. “I’ve directed our state agencies to offer all available resources to assist our local partners in responding to the fire, and we’ll continue to coordinate with the emergency response team to monitor the fire. Property can be replaced, but lives cannot – as our coordinated response to the fire continues, I ask New Mexicans to be mindful of this, and to not take unnecessary risks.”
The Governor’s declaration of a state of emergency will enable counties to order and pay for additional resources needed to help with this emergency. Earlier today, the Governor also ordered the activation of New Mexico’s Emergency Operations Center to assist in the coordinated response to the fire.
State agencies such as the New Mexico State Police, the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, New Mexico State Forestry, and others are assisting with the response to the fire. The Governor has also directed the New Mexico National Guard to be prepared to assist with the response if needed.
The Dog Head Wildfire is affecting areas of Bernalillo and Torrance Counties, and has burned approximately 2,000 acres so far. State and local authorities will continue to monitor and respond to the fire through a coordinated effort as the situation develops.
