“I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guard post. There I will wait to see what the Lord says and how he will answer my complaint. 2 Then the Lord said to me, “Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others. 3 This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” (Habakkuk 2:1-3 NLT)
I know I’ve used this passage, probably several times, in past writings. I’m always amazed at how many different ways God can speak to you through the same scripture at different seasons of your life.
First, let me give you some understanding of this passage. Prophets of this day saw themselves as watchman on the walls of their cities. They would stand watch and wait for a message from God that they could share with the people. Now, under the Old Covenant they were responsible to warn the city of approaching danger, and if they weren’t faithful, they could be held responsible for those who died as a result of not being warned. It was a serious responsibility. Today, under the New Covenant, Prophets play a different role. It’s more of an encouraging, uplifting role. Not that there may not be times when God gives them a word of warning, but it’s not a gloom and doom role that they play and they certainly are not held responsible for the death of others.
How I want to relate this to your life is, we all need a watchtower in our lives. Not a literal watchtower, but a time and place where we can go to hear clearly from God for our own lives. What I heard the Lord say when I read this passage was, “Climb Your Watchtower.” I believe the Body of Christ is in a key season where God is speaking clear strategies and direction. In order to hear clearly, you need to climb your watchtower where you can see a picture of your life. You need to be able to see everything going on without and hindrances. You need to stand at your guard post and as God begins to speak, write it plainly, make it clear. Many times the prophets would have a messenger so they would have to write it very clear so that the messenger could carry the correct message.
Make your calling clear so that when others see you, there is no question as to what God has called you to do. This is a season where God is going to clear up your calling. He’s removing the things that have clouded you in the past, He’s clearing up your eyesight so that you can see clearly. What God has for your life will come to pass, it will not be delayed. Be diligent in doing whatever He instructs you to do and you will not miss it.
It’s time to climb your watchtower, listen closely, write it down, and make it clear.
