Cruz wins GOP race in Iowa; Dems too close to call

DES MOINES — Ted Cruz won the Iowa Republican caucuses on Monday night, but Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were locked in a razor-close race that was still undecided as the time neared 1:30 a.m. on the East Coast.

Clinton sought to make an implicit claim to victory when she told cheering supporters, “I stand before you breathing a big sigh of relief — thank you, Iowa.”

But Sanders, who addressed his own rally a short time later, declared the result to be “a virtual tie” against “the most powerful political organization in the United States of America.”
