Netanyahu in Washington for White House visit
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu kicked off his trip to Washington on Monday with a visit to the White House, where he was scheduled to discuss, among other things, ways to improve Israel’s security posture. At the center of Monday’s talks between Netanyahu and US President Barak Obama is the renewal of a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries on military aid to Israel, which has been set at $3.1 billion a year since 2007 and which Israel is reportedly hoping will be increased to $5 billion a year from 2017-2027. The aid money is mandated to be mostly spent on procuring US manufactured weapons and military equipment, with squadrons of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the V-22 Osprey transport expected to account for a large percentage of the increase going forward.
