Another Iranian commander killed in Syria
Iranian media reported on Tuesday that another senior officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was killed recently in Syria, although Iran still officially denies it has deployed combat forces to Syria. In related news, a senior IRGC commander said this week that Iran is more committed to the Assad regime than Russia is, with Russia’s Foreign Ministry releasing a statement seeming to confirm that assertion Tuesday, declaring that the Kremlin does not consider it to be a matter of principle that the Assad regime remain in power. However, another regime change in the Middle East “could simply turn the whole region into a large black hole”, asserted Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova. Meanwhile, critics have pointed to an increasing civilian death toll from Russia’s air campaign in Syria, while talks held recently in Vienna among diplomats from all the major players backing various factions in Syria’s civil war failed to produce an agreement for how to proceed.
