US officials announced on Monday that Russia has deployed a small number of tanks and other armored vehicles to an airfield south of Latakia, as part of a more general build-up of military power in western Syria. A Pentagon official said that so far the equipment appears to be deployed only to defend the airfield, but noted that the Russian military is sending two large cargo planes full of weapons and supplies to the base every day and could quickly come to a point where the Russian forces there could be positioned to launch offensive operations.
