Capital Prayer Alert

As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a
prayer alert about once a month. I
hope you will share Carol’s thoughts with
your friends and fellow
worshippers. Thank you for taking an interest in her
monthly devotion. —

The country is entering a precarious time, a
period of testing. In the
waning months of the Obama Administration we must
remain vigilant, involved
and focused on our future. With 16 months to go, the
president reminds us
regularly that he has no intention of slipping quietly
off center stage,
even as the spotlight begins to shift off him and to the
field of possible
successors.

Obama’s counter to this inevitable change is
to remind anyone who will
listen that he will continue to push his agenda
until Inauguration Day
2017. The disdain he shows toward Congress and the will
of the American
people, as witnessed most recently in the handling of the Iran
nuclear
deal, is breathtaking.

A reluctant Congress lacking either the will
or the strategic thinking to
thwart him has been his foil. Sixteen months is a
long time under these
circumstances.

Please turn to our Heavenly Father in
these days of uncertainty. Ask Him to
steady the ship of state. Pray that He
would not lift His hand of
protection from our country as we move toward the
final days of this
political era. Ask Him to strengthen and embolden
congressional leaders so
that our system of co-equal branches of government
would be more vibrant in
the days ahead.

Pray that the Lord’s people would
be vigilant watchmen, looking out for
what is best for the United States so
that we can continue to be a beacon
of freedom and religious opportunity in a
world beset with religious
conflict and totalitarianism. Remind us that
without a strong United States
we cannot have an impact for good in the
community of nations.

With two 2016 presidential debates in the history
books and months of early
campaigning behind us, the race for the presidency
is beginning to take
shape.

Voters appear to be looking for candidates who
offer forceful leadership, a
strong sense of patriotism, an engaging, can-do
view of America’s role in
the world and the ability to connect on a visceral
level. Many voters feel
that they have too often vested their time and energy
in candidates who
fail to deliver.

Voters are looking for passion,
authenticity, fight, strategic thinking and
a candidate who is not blindly
bound by protocol. They want someone who can
articulate their hopes and dreams
for our country, who understands their
concerns and who can restore our
nation, not manage its decline.

Americans believe the country is headed in
the wrong direction and they are
ready to get behind a strong leader committed
to making a U turn.

The search for that individual is clarifying as the
political season
unfolds. For all the shortcomings of our political process —
the debate
structure, questions and follow-up, television and radio
interviews, town
halls, meet and greets and formal speeches — we are getting
to the point
where we are able to take the measure of the candidates.

We
see them scripted and unscripted, in casual and formal settings, with
and
without their families. They are coming into better focus. Some that
looked
great early on are not wearing well. Others who were considered very
long
shots are commanding a more serious look. Once-dominant figures have
dropped
out or are struggling to remain relevant. This year, a proven
record in office
seems less important than the intangible combination of
the qualities noted
above.

Ask God to open your mind to the right mix of qualities necessary for
the
next president of the United States. Pray that the appearances of the

candidates would flesh out their records, qualities, knowledge and plans to

attack the myriad problems facing our country.

Ask God to keep them and
their families safe in the grueling days ahead.
Pray that personal, demeaning
attacks would be kept to a minimum so that
the concerns of the voters can be
truly addressed. Thank God for the open
process of which we are a part.
