Trust in the Lord

by Laura Rosecrans

This morning as I listened to my precious Pastor at New Beginnings Church in Albuquerque, Richard Mansfield, and his message online – I had one of those moments in time when you have been thinking of something and then God confirms it.

His sermon was on Proverbs 3 and the message was in trusting in the Lord. I remember verses 5-6 well because we put it to a song so my children could remember it as they were growing up. Amazing how timeless God’s word is. Proverbs 3: 5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not in your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.”

What amazing and incredible verses but ones that are highly ignored or misunderstood by even the most seasoned of believers. This passage starts out with a command – not a suggestion. Pastor Richard’s 4 points were: 1. Obey His commands. 2. God is trustworthy and worthy to be trusted. 3. God’s care is constant. 4. We have to develop our trust in God and trust Him ALL the time.

This passage commands US to do 3 things first: Trust in the Lord, lean not on our own understanding, and in ALL our ways acknowledge Him – THEN He will direct our paths. Then in verse 7-8 He tells us, “Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh and strength to your bones.”

cover150x250I am reading a book called “The Wounded Heart” by Dr. Dan B. Allender – a book about hope for victims of sexual abuse and he made a statement that really hit me. Dr. Allender says, “The devilishness of abuse is that it does Satan’s work of deceiving children about God’s true nature and encouraging them to mistrust Him. Fearing to trust God, the abuse victim will naturally chose other gods to provide her with life, whether alcohol, promiscuity or approval seeking.”

As I continue on my abortion healing and walk side by side with my sisters who have gone through abortions of their own, time and time God brings to mind that HE WAS there during our moment of crisis and abortions. He was there to catch us when we realized the horrible mistake we had made. He was there when we went through the abuses at the hands of people we should have been able to trust in. We may not understand the whys but we CAN trust in His word that points us to His true nature – He is worthy of our trust.

Satan will hit us where he knows our weaknesses lie and God will allow us to be tested in the areas that still need to be conformed to the image of His Son. How long the testing will go on is up to us. Will we whine and complain and scream out, “It’s not fair” or will we trust and praise Him for the testing our faith and quickly learn the lesson He wants us to learn and rejoice that He loves us so much as Proverbs 3: 11-12 says, “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest his correction; For whom the Lord loves He corrects.” So what if those that do not serve Him seem to be prospering around us. This is not something to be envious of but to feel compassion for. God forbid we be the ones that God has left alone because WE have chosen to desert Him.

Remember James 1:2-8 which says, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.  So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” NLT
