Israeli officials reacted with alarm Monday to reports that Russia has lifted its five-year ban on the delivery of S-300 air-defense missile system to Iran. “Instead of demanding that Iran desist from the terrorist activity that it is carrying out in the Middle East and throughout the world, it is being allowed to arm itself with advanced weapons that will only increase its aggression,” said Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz. He and other Israeli officials blamed the recently announced “framework agreement” between Iran and the P5+1 nuclear powers (US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany) for the development. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov appeared to confirm the linkage when he told US Secretary of State John Kerry Monday evening that Moscow’s self-imposed ban was no longer needed in light of the agreement, despite it’s not yet having been finalized.
