Former Santa Fe, NM Mayor George Gonzales Passes Onto Heaven, Operated Radio Stations

Frank Haley of KDAZ AM730 NEWS REPORTS: George GonzalesSANTA FE, NM — Former Santa Fe, New Mexico Mayor George A. Gonzales has died. Gonzales, father of current Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales, headed the City Different from 1968-72. George Gonzales was lifelong Santa Fean, family man, musician, businessman and brother of the late Blackie Gonzales, founder of Son Broadcasting. George Gonzales also served as a Santa Fe County commissioner and made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1972.

He began performing music as a teenager, part of a trio that sang traditional Spanish music. He later became a successful radio announcer on KTRC before launching his own radio stations. He bought the Spanish radio station KDCE in Española, which he ran for 15 years. In 1991, he started KSWV in Santa Fe, which he ran with the help of his four sons. He was at the microphone daily announcing birthdays, wedding anniversaries, special intentions for the sick and alerting people when someone had died. Please pray for the families comfort.
