The gate to Auchwitz (Wikipedia)The Polish city of Krakow saw a large gathering of Holocaust survivors and their families on Tuesday as the world marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp near the end of WWII. Heads of state, leaders of NGOs and other dignitaries from several countries also attended the gathering. “You are witnesses. You serve as our eyes and memory to what happened here,” said World Jewish Congress president Ronald Lauder. “The way you lived your lives after you were liberated teaches us an important lesson in human dignity.” Meanwhile, several of the survivors expressed mixed feelings about being back at the place where so many of their family and friends were murdered, saying it brought up painful memories for them but adding that it is important to remind the world of what is possible when evil proceeds unopposed.
