Nuclear Scientists Assassinated in Damascus

Nuclear blast (Illustrative)An opposition group in Syria reported on Monday that five nuclear engineers, including four Syrians and one Iranian, were assassinated on Sunday in an area of Damascus under the control of the Assad regime. Official media in Iran and Syria failed to mention the incident, and no one has claimed responsibility for the hit. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials have noted two atomic facilities near Damascus where suspected weapons development has occurred in the past, but inspections have largely been abandoned since 2011 amid the country’s multi-faceted civil war. Meanwhile, nuclear negotiations continued on Monday in Oman between US Secretary of State John Kerry, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and European Union senior adviser Catherine Ashton.
