restPsalm 91: “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. (2) This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. (3) For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. (4) He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. (5) Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. (6) Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. (7) Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. (8) Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. (9) If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, (10) no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. (11) For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. (12) They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. (13) You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! (14) The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. (15) When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. (16) I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

“Rest: freedom from activity or labor, a state of motionlessness or inactivity, peace of mind or spirit, something used for support.”

Rest is something that most of us can probably say we don’t always get enough of. The responsibilities of life can keep us very busy.  For some of you reading this it goes beyond the responsibilities of life and is actually the burdens of life that are keeping you from resting.  I hope to encourage you this week to find rest.  You may be reading this and having a hard time getting through it because the cares of life have your mind so consumed that you can’t even focus long enough to get through this short writing.  If that got your attention, then this is for you.  The Lord wants you to find rest in Him.  When you can’t sleep on your own, and can’t seem to stop your mind from reeling.  When there’s nothing you can do in your own will to remove the cares and burdens you are dealing with, the Lord will be the rest you need.  You can find it in Him.

This passage that I’ve used this week is hard to break down in its entirety because there is so much in this passage. You will have to take it upon yourself to read it and let God speak to you directly.  The key, however, to the entire passage lies in verse 1. “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” It’s when you choose to live in the shelter of the Most High that rest will come.  When you choose to take all of your cares and all of your worries and place them under the shelter of God, you will find rest in His shadow. Verse 1 is the action on your part; the rest is what He will do.  He will be your refuge and safety.  He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.  He will be your cover and shelter.  His promises are your armor and protection.  Read his promises in the Bible and see that every care and worry you have is covered by a promise.  When we find rest we don’t have to be afraid, we don’t have to dread things that may come our way.

Verse 7 says: “Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.” Don’t listen to the voices that tell you someone else went through what you’re going through and they didn’t make it.  The disease killed them, they went bankrupt, their marriage ended, they lost their job, their family disowned them.

The rest of this passage tells you why you don’t need to listen to these voices: “If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

I don’t know who this is for this week, but I’m sure many of you need this or you know someone who needs this.

I’ve included a song this week that I encourage you to listen to. Ask the Lord to quiet your heart and quiet your soul.  Post Psalm 91 some place where you will see it.  Read it morning, noon, and night until it gets in you.  Of all the definitions I found for the word “rest” that I wrote in the beginning, my favorite one is the last one.  “Something used for support.”  When you find rest in the Lord, He will be your support.  When you feel like you can’t stand, lean on Him, He will hold you up.  I hope you are encouraged with this.  This is your time to find your rest.

Blessings – Steve
