In an article reported in the Albuquerque Journal yesterday, July 2, 2014, Linda Herrera, a bookkeeper working for the McCall Organization, a business that owns several companies, embezzled over $400,000 over the course of three years, beginning in 2009.

Authorities were able to account for $30,000 of the money, which was distributed in automatic payments toward her mortgage.  They are not altogether sure of what the remainder of the money was spent on, although they reported that many of the ATM withdrawals were made at local casinos.  It is pretty unlikely that the casinos will not be forthcoming with details on her gambling activities.

The embezzlement was damaging to the McCall Organization businesses, causing financial problems for the owners and the employees.  Most people seem to feel that someone’s gambling problems are their own affair, and have little to do with others, but this story illustrates how a gambling addict can affect the lives of their family and scores of other people.

The gambling addict often ends up on welfare rolls, bankrupt, divorced, and many resort to criminal activity to raise money to feed their addiction.  All these things impact society at large and end up costing the state a great deal of tax money.

It’s time for the government to get out of the predatory gambling business
