Standing in the gap and making a way

The Daily Jot is not only a ministry that comments on current events from a Biblical worldview to equip, encourage, and evangelize, we are also an out reach to those in rural most areas of Ghana, West Africa who mainline churches have essentially forgotten. Many of you are very familiar with the Jot’s commentary. Some are familiar with our outreach in Africa. But today, yet another event, underscores the effort we are making to not only bring the gospel to the rural areas, but to make disciples. There is a crusade of sorts going on in Africa. It mirrors the historical crusades of the Middle Ages because it is the Islamists who are conducting a death crusade against all non-muslims. It is dangerous and deadly.

AP reports that Islamists sprayed gunfire at worshipers and torched four Christian churches Sunday in a village “just miles from the town where more than 200 school girls were kidnapped.” AP reports “Some of the church buildings destroyed included the Protestant Church of Christ in Nigeria, the Pentecostal Deeper Life Bible Church and Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa, which is Hausa for Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, Yahi said. The last was started by American missionaries from Illinois in the 1920s.” The attackers went on to neighboring Kautikari, where they gunned down villagers and burned down homes. The report said soldiers were slow to respond to the attacks and refused to confront the terrorists directly.

While not yet as extreme in Ghana, this is the type of threat we are faced with. We saved for three years to buy a pickup truck so we could deliver clothing and food to our rural church plant in Busuafise on something other than motorbikes. The head of our ministry there, William Agbeti sent me a text not long ago: “I have just returned from a tour of the surrounding areas of our rural church, in our truck. My findings were shocking! Over the past few weeks, mosques have started springing up in the remotest parts, a few miles apart, where there are no houses and Muslims yet! Meanwhile, the big churches seem not to care, until Islam takes over the land.” What happens next is the problem.

The roaming Fulani, who subscribe to the Islamist Boko Haram philosophy (the terrorists in neighboring Nigeria), will begin to occupy the land either by squatting or by force. If by force, these unprotected rural villages will be raised and the people slaughtered just the same as in Nigeria. The Lord said in Ezekiel 22:30, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” In Ghana, there are brave and courageous men such as William and pastor David Ablorah in Busuafise who are standing in the gap that their land may not be destroyed, even as large churches with huge resources stand idly by. It is no easy task.

They are on the front lines of a very dangerous mission to not only bring the gospel to the rural areas where the mega churches refuse to go, but also to make disciples and to show the love of Christ. They are making a difference with what little they have been given. They have been faithful to make a way when there is no way, and they have put their lives on the line to do it. My ask of you today is to consider them, not only in prayer, but also financially. If the Lord so moves you, you can send your gift to:
