(Tokyo) — Japan’s prime minister wants to restart that country’s closed nuclear reactors but faces a huge challenge following the Fukushima disaster. Japan had 54 reactors operating before a tsunami triggered a near meltdown at Fukushima in March, 2011, causing the closure of all the country’s nuclear plants. New safety rules and numerous environmental and political concerns make it unlikely many of the 48 reactors remaining will reopen. A new analysis shows 14 of the plants are likely to reopen, 17 more could with heavy modifications and 17 others will probably be shut down for good.
