Whitewater Fire Information 4/10/2014 @ Time: 10:00

Start Date & Time:  4/9/2014 @ 15:15

Start Location:  78 Whitewater Road, east of Highway 90, south of Tyrone, Grant County

Cause of Fire:  human, burn barrel

Area Vegetation:  grass, brush, oak

Acres Burned:  estimate 30-40 acres.  NM State Forestry will GPS the fire perimeter today.

Ownership(s):  Private

Structures Threatened:  none

Structures Burned: two out buildings destroyed

Evacuations (Y or N & #):  none reported

Situation:  Fire personnel worked last night to secure the fire perimeter and mop up the burn area. There was no growth in fire perimeter overnight.  A few hot spots remain this morning. Two engine crews will continue to strengthen the fire perimeter, mop up, and patrol for hot spots throughout today. It has been determined that the fire was caused when burning trash in a burn barrel escaped in the wind and ignited nearby vegetation.

Acres Burned: 12 acres plus

Ownership(s): Private

Structures Threatened: 5 to 6 residences

Structures Burned: two out buildings lost

Evacuations (Y or N & #): none reported

Situation: Crews continue to actively work to cut off the fire’s spread toward a ridge to the south. An airtanker has been called in to make retardant drops along the southern edge, to help slow the spread and keep the fire away from additional residences.

Wind Speeds: 18-22 mph

Wind Direction: from the west

# of Crews: one 10 person module from USFS
