When I was a young fella, (enough of the jokes, I know that was a long time ago – LOL), each morning when we went to school, our day started with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. It was an honor to do so and nobody questioned if it was politically correct or not. As a matter of fact, we considered it Patriotic and it was actually fun to honor the country which provided us the liberties and freedom we enjoyed!
In Oklahoma, a bill that has been filed by Republican Senator Rob Standridge of Norman, Oklahoma would require daily recitation of the pledge in public elementary schools which will go before the 2014 legislative session. It would also require every public school in the state to own and display a U.S. flag and suggests that the pledge be recited in other public schools as well. The bill provides an exemption for students who do not wish to take part in the pledge. It is among several pieces of school-related legislation that were filed in December.
A bill by Senator Eddie Fields, R-Wynona, would require the State Board of Education to adopt revisions to the state’s current English, language arts and mathematics requirements to remove alignment with the K-12 Common Core State Standards. The national standards have drawn opposition, especially from conservative House legislators. Field’s bill would also require the state board to take action to initiate a request with the U.S. Department of Education to change the agreement that ties federal funding to the implementation of the Common Core standards.
State lawmakers return to the Capitol on February 3 for the beginning of the 2014 legislative session where I’m personally in prayer for the bill’s passage. It would be so nice to know at least one state is bringing God & Country back into our children’s education.
