Nelson Mandela, RIP

Nelson Mandela, who passed away yesterday at the age of 95, was an extraordinary man. He led the fight against the odious system of apartheid in South Africa, spent 27 years in prison and emerged from that ordeal to become the first black leader of his country.

Fortunately for South Africa, during his prison years Mandela ended his flirtation with Marxism and chose upon his release to be a voice for reconciliation, not revenge. Sadly, however, he retained an affection for some of the world’s worst despots. He regularly praised Libya’s Gaddafi and Cuba’s Castro.

Yet after winning the presidency of South Africa, Mandela, unlike other revolutionaries, chose to step down after one term. In 2002, President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

South Africa certainly faces incredible challenges today, but due to Mandela’s leadership, it is much better off than other African countries like Zimbabwe, which has the misfortune of being governed by Robert Mugabe, an unrepentant left-wing thug.

Not surprisingly, the political left can’t resist exploiting Mandela’s death today, using the occasion to attack Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Dick Cheney for not supporting Mandela in the 1980s. What the critics are conveniently overlooking is that the Cold War was raging at the time, and Mandela and his African National Congress chose to align themselves with the Soviets.

More often than not, the ANC sided with the world’s worst despots, while accusing the U.S. of atrocities. For Reagan and Thatcher, defeating the Soviets was the number one priority. They did defeat it and tens of millions of people now enjoy freedom as a result.

Ironically, the Mandela who emerged from prison followed many policies that the American left today rejects. He cut spending, privatized state industries, reformed the South African economy, encouraged investment and strove to build a vibrant middle class. He rejected efforts to divide the country by exploiting class or race.

May he rest in peace.

Today’s Obamacare Disaster Update

Since the December 1st relaunch of Healthcare.gov, Obama and his liberal allies have been desperately trying to convince the American people that Obamacare is now working smoothly. They are even touting a “surge” of enrollments, which in two days this week exceeded October’s total. But despite their wishful thinking and self-delusion, the headlines tell a different story.

“Low-Information Leadership”

Obamacare is the president’s signature initiative. It was the most sweeping legislative change in decades. It is a massive tax increase that radically alters one-sixth of the American economy and vastly expands the IRS and the government’s intrusion into our lives.

Given Obamacare’s importance to Obama’s legacy (not to mention the political careers of many Democrats), how many times do you think Obama sat down face-to-face with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, whose office was charged with implementing Obamacare? Just once.

Former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan wrote a brilliant column this week critiquing Obama’s leadership given the calamitous failure of Obamacare. She described Obama as a “low-information leader,” out-of-touch with the real world and overly impressed by his own words. Here are few key excerpts:
