The Baptist Convention of New Mexico’s executive director, Joseph Bunce, has recorded a video encouraging Albuquerque voters to vote for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance on Nov. 19 and Baptists across the state to support the effort in prayer.

Messengers to the BCNM annual meeting, which was held in Albuquerque Oct. 22-23, unanimously approved a resolution of support for the proposal, which would make the state’s largest city the first in the nation to ban abortions 20 weeks or more into pregnancy. The Resolutions Committee explained that the committee recognized that only Albuquerque citizens could vote Nov. 19, but the committee believed it was important for New Mexico Baptists to encourage them to approve the ordinance.

The measure, which would permit an exception for endangerment of the mother’s life, is set at halfway through pregnancy based on scientific evidence that an unborn child at that stage of development experiences pain.
