The Albuquerque Journal is reporting that 31 New Mexico county clerks filed a petition with the state Supreme Court today aimed at getting a decisive, statewide ruling on the legality of same-sex marriage.

In their petition to the Supreme Court, attorneys for the county clerks argued the patchwork sanctioning of same-sex marriage in New Mexico has been costly for counties.

As of today, seven of the state’s 33 county clerks have started issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, either voluntarily or in response to lower court orders. An eighth county clerk has said he will begin issuing licenses next week.

Earlier this week the Los Alamos county clerk challenged a lower court’s authority to decide the matter as marriage has been established law in New Mexico for decades, if not centuries. Unfortunately, the county clerk backed down and deferred to the courts ruling.

Rouge county clerks and judges are creating a state of anarchy or lawlessness in New Mexico and Governor Suzanna Martinez has yet to call for a special session of the New Mexico legislature to give guidance to the court. It is erroneously believed that the Supreme Court is the final arbitrator on the issue of same sex unions.

However, because it has been believed for so long we now await a handful of unelected individuals to determine the morality of our state.
