Several Killed in Egypt Protests, U.S. Deploys More Troops to Region

Rioting (Illustrative)Demonstrations were held in Egypt on Sunday to mark the fourth anniversary of anti-Mubarak regime protests there, resulting in the deaths of 15 people and many more injuries. Most of the casualties resulted when angry protests believed to be led by Moslem Brotherhood activists were fired upon by security forces in the Cairo suburb of Matariya, a stronghold of the Brotherhood. Several fires also broke out during the demonstrations after gasoline bombs were hurled at police by protesters, accompanied by chants of “down with military rule” and “a revolution all over again.” The protests occurred against a backdrop of a rising Islamist insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, even as Washington announced the deployment of hundreds of troops to Iraq and other parts of the region to battle several raging conflicts.
