Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met at the Vatican on Sunday, as guests of Pope Francis, for a joint “Prayer for Peace” event also attended by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and dozens of other Jewish, Christian, Moslem and Druze religious leaders from around the world. “Peacemaking calls for courage, much more so than warfare,” Francis told his guests during a joint press conference. “It calls for the courage to say yes to encounter and no to conflict: yes to dialogue and no to violence; yes to negotiations and no to hostilities. All of this takes courage, it takes strength and tenacity.” Peres and Abbas thanked the Pope for hosting the event, gave remarks expressing similar hopes for peace but offering no hints at a diplomatic breakthrough.
