New Mexico State Forestry

Sends Dozens of Firefighters to Western States

SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico State Forestry Division (NMSF) is once again answering the call for fire suppression assistance by sending additional wildland firefighting crews to western states affected by numerous large wildfires. At least 100 NMSF personnel from across New Mexico are supporting fire suppression efforts including 42 members of the Returning Heroes Wildland Firefighting Program (RHP).

“This year the West has seen one of the worst fire seasons on record with more than two million acres of land in flames,” said State Forester Donald Griego. “Now that New Mexico’s fire activity has slowed, the State Forestry Division is able to share its experienced resources with fellow states in their time of need.”

RHP crews, which consist of veterans and civilians, are currently battling the 48,000-acre Eagle Creek Fire in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge. This is their 5th tour and third fire in the state of Oregon, which included support during the Total Eclipse in August. All six NMSF districts have sent engine crews to California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Washington.

“The men and women of State Forestry are hardworking and very skilled wildland firefighters,” said Griego. “We are proud to have them representing New Mexico and the Division as they help our western neighbors.”

The height of New Mexico’s wildfire season typically ends with the arrival of monsoon weather. NMSF remains well prepared with numerous firefighters and resources still available throughout our state.
