Governor Susana Martinez Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff in Honor and Mourning of Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman
Santa Fe, NM — Today, Governor Susana Martinez issued an executive order for flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise on Saturday, January 21, 2017 to sunset on Monday, January 23, 2017 in honor and mourning of Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 2017-001
FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR AND MOURNING OF LEA COUNTY SHERIFF STEVE ACKERMAN
WHEREAS, Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman, of Lovington, New Mexico leaves behind a long and distinguished legacy of dedicated service as a law enforcement professional;
WHEREAS, Sheriff Ackerman passed away while traveling to Santa Fe to advocate on behalf of his community and profession to New Mexico’s elected representatives;
WHEREAS, Sheriff Ackerman began his long and distinguished career in the service of the people of his community and state in 1991 at the Lea County Detention Center;
WHEREAS, After attaining the rank of Captain, he transferred to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office in 2002;
WHEREAS, Sheriff Ackerman’s decades of selfless service is a shining example of New Mexico’s law enforcement professionals, who daily dedicate their lives to keeping our communities and our state safe;
WHEREAS, Sheriff Ackerman is survived by his wife and children, many family and friends, and a saddened yet grateful community;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susana Martinez, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise on Saturday, January 21, 2017 to sunset on Monday, January 23, 2017 in honor and mourning of Lea County Sheriff Steve Ackerman. The thoughts and prayers of the people of New Mexico go out to his family, friends, and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement.
