Retired Gen. James Mattis confirmed as defense secretary, first Cabinet confirmation for Trump

Just hours after Donald Trump was sworn in as president, the Senate confirmed retired Gen. James Mattis to run the Pentagon as defense secretary. Congress had to give Mattis an exception to serve in the post because the defense secretary must be a civilian and Mattis retired from the military less than seven years ago.
