Encourage Roadway Safety During Balloon Fiesta

Albuquerque, NM – Tomorrow, visitors from all over the world will enjoy one of New Mexico’s most popular traditions – the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. That means more motorists will be on our roads and highways. It’s important that drivers pay extra attention to roadway safety and remember not to park on NMDOT roads and right-of-ways.

“We all have to do our part to keep our roads safe during Balloon Fiesta,” said NMDOT Deputy Secretary Loren Hatch said. “That means keeping our eyes on the road, putting our cell phones away, buckling up and giving other motorists space. I know that together we’ll make this another safe and successful Balloon Fiesta.”

“Balloon Fiesta is a great event to capture on your phone or camera,” Balloon Fiesta Executive Director Paul Smith said. “Please wait until you safely reach your destination to watch the balloons or take and share pictures with your family and friends on social media. Be Safe and considerate of other drivers.”

NMDOT roadways and right-of-ways must be kept clear for the safety of the public. Please remember parking is prohibited in the following areas:

  • NM 556 (Tramway Boulevard / Roy Avenue) between I-25 and NM 313 (Roundabout)
  • NM 556 (Tramway Boulevard) east of I-25 to Forest Service Road 333
  • NB and SB I-25 between Tramway and San Mateo Blvd
  • NM 313 between Roy Avenue (Roundabout) to Milepost 6 (Town of Bernalillo)
  • Alameda Boulevard (NM 528)
  • Edith Boulevard North of Paseo Del Norte

NMDOT’s Courtesy Patrol crew will also be available along I-25 in the vicinity of the event to maintain the traffic flow along the interstate. Courtesy Patrol is tasked with keeping New Mexico roads safe by assisting stranded motorists and helping them get back on the road.
