Western leaders vow greater cooperation against IS

US Navy (USN Photograph)US President Barack Obama hosted French President Francois Hollande at the White House on Tuesday and emerged with a pledge to intensify the air campaign against the Islamic State (IS) terror militia in Syria and Iraq as well as increase intelligence cooperation and other joint efforts. The two leaders also urged Russia to join their coalition but added a condition that the kremlin drop its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. “We hope that they refocus their attention on what is the most substantial threat, and that they serve as a constructive partner,” Obama said of Russia. Meanwhile, Obama’s National Security Council was meeting at the White House Tuesday to discuss the ongoing threat from IS and possible responses, even as military and civilian analysts agree that one popular idea, creating a “no-fly zone” in the skies over Syria, would require a large number of US ground forces, something most US officials are not prepared to contemplate. Read More
