The Fall of Great Nations

Falling

Hello, I’m Jerry Stewart. When our 13 colonies were still a part of England, before there even was a United States of America, a Professor Alexander Tyler wrote about the rise and fall of great nations, and one nation in particular that had fallen over 2000 years prior – the Athenian Republic. He talked about its vast and powerful influence over the world, and how it seemed that it could never lose its greatness – but it did.

Here is what Professor Tyler said, “The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been about 200 year.  These nations have progressed through the following sequences:

from bondage to spiritual faith;

from spiritual faith to great courage;

from great courage to liberty;

from liberty to abundance;

from abundance to selfishness;

from selfishness to complacency;

from complacency to apathy;

from apathy to dependency;

and from dependency back to bondage.

Today America is truly a great nation – about 240 years old, and if you take the time to study the history of our great nation, you can see every sequence just like Professor Tyler said.

But here’s my question for today, “Just where is America in this ‘great nation’ sequence of progression?  Complacency?  Apathy?  Dependency?” That’s a frightening question. But even more frightening is just how long will it take before we end up back in bondage? 100 years? 10 years? Are we almost there? Think about it.
