Flags of Russia and Israel (Illustrative)Talks were conducted between Israeli and Russian officials Wednesday towards establishing “a joint mechanism for preventing misunderstandings” as the military and intelligence services of the two countries continue to monitor and operate in Syria. The Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement saying similar talks were being conducted with Turkey, while Israeli officials said they need to continue operating against terrorism directed at Israel from Syrian territory and prevent the transfer of high-quality weapons to the Shi’ite terror militia Hezbollah, neither of which conflicts with Russia’s objectives in Syria. Meanwhile, Russian forces escalated the situation Wednesday by firing 26 cruise missiles almost 1,000 miles from ships based in the Caspian Sea into eastern Syria in a display of firepower and technical prowess that left many Western analysts stunned.
