This past week, the Vatican announced that it had reached an agreement with the “State of Palestine” concerning the status of Catholic properties in the Holy Land. The move was criticized by Israeli officials, who described it as a premature decision which would only encourage the Palestinians to continue avoiding direct peace talks with Jerusalem. And to make matters worse, Pope Francis then hosted Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in Rome, where he welcomed him by calling him an “angel of peace”. This also upset many Israeli leaders, who view Abbas as actually doing everything he can to block a negotiated peace with Israel. So both moves have raised some serious questions about the Vatican’s agenda, such as why did they recognize a Palestinian state at this time?
