The Albuquerque City Council will take up a tax increase on Monday night at a special meeting. The proposal would be a new one-eighth cent gross-receipts tax, which would add 12.5 cents to a $100.00 purchase. The revenue would be earmarked for helping people with mental illness, homelessness or addiction. I believe we, the citizens need more details to this plan, it almost feels like a knee jerk reaction. The meeting is Monday at 5pm in the Vince Griego chambers of the city-county Government Center, One Civic Plaza NW. Councilors are divided over whether to take up a proposal to abolish the Police Oversight Commission and replace it with a new “Civilian Police Oversight Agency”.
